Upper Dolpo Trekking
Dolpo is the largest district of Nepal. It is situated at the mid western development region, so it is also a remote and undeveloped districts. The districts cover about 6 percent of the total land of Nepal. Despite the remoteness, we can get an enormous number of animals and vegetation while trekking to this region. The whole Dolpo has been divided into two parts; they are upper Dolpo and lower Dolpo. The upper Dolpo is the settlement of people of Tibetan community.
Most of them follow Buddhist religion. The upper Dolpo is a restricted area. We have to pay fee of US $500 for the first 10 days and US $50 for each additional day. But, despite this restriction a large number of people used to visit here every day. The restriction actually has made the area very special and exclusive experience. The trekking to Dolpo is quiet difficult. We can visit Shay Gompa. It is one of the popular pilgrimages of the area. At upper Dolpo, we have to hike at the high passes at Kang la pass at the altitude of 5375m. We have to stay all the night above 4000m.
The trek begins from Kathmandu. The way goes through the Juphal, Dunai, and kageni, Chhepka, Ringmo, Shay and Lingdo. We have to spend many nights at the camp. Throughout the way, we can see beautiful picture of Himalayas along with the animals and vegetation. We can interact with the local people who will be obviously enchanting and encouraging.
Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu
After catching the flight from your local airport, you will be landed at Tribhuvan international airport. You will be warmly welcomed by the representative of Google Trek Visit Mustang. She/he will guide you towards the hotel room at Kathmandu. The night we will spend at Kathmandu having delicious dinner and discussing about the trek further to upper Dolpo.
Day 02: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
From Kathmandu, we will catch the early flight to Nepalgunj. It will take few minutes for us to reach there. We can spend the night at Nepalgunj visiting the local market at rickshaw. We can visit many Hindu temples at Nepalgunj. The Nepalgunj is as hot as we may experience a temperature of about 40 degree Celsius.
Day 03: Nepalgunj to Juphal on flight and trek to Chhepka
Early morning after having the breakfast, we will fly over to Juphal. The Juphal is situated at the altitude of 2475m. After getting off from the flight, we have to trek for few hours to reach to Chhepka. The Chhepka is situated at the height of 2838m above sea level. We have to trek for around 6 hours today.
Day 04: Chhepka to Chunuwar
From Chhepka, we will resume our trek for the day. We have to walk for about 6 hours to complete our objectives. We can view panoramic view of mountains and forest throughout the way. After walking through the main trail, we can reach at Amchi hospital at Chunuwar at the altitude of 3110m above sea level. We will stay the night at Chunuwar.
Day 05: Chunuwar to Phoksundo Lake
From Chunuwar, after having the fine breakfast, we will move towards the Ringmo. We can follow the main trekking route to the top. The Phoksundo Lake is situated at the height of 3733m above sea level. From Chunuwar, we have to trek for about 3 hours. The night will be at Phoksundo Lake.
Day 06: Phoksundo Lake to Chunemba
Early morning with sun, we resume our journey towards Chunemba. The trekking route is about 5 hours long. We can enjoy the beautiful scenic beauty throughout the way while passing through the trail. At Chunemba, we are at the altitude of 3639m above sea level. We will stay the night at Chunemba.
Day 07: Chunemba to snow fields camp
The trail from Chunemba leads us towards the Snowfields camp. As we move up with altitude, we can see less number of vegetation and settlements. The snowfields are at the height of 4400m. We have to trek for about 6 to 7 hours to reach to Snowfields camp from Chunemba.
Day 08: Snow fields to Shey Gompa via Kang la
After spending a night at snowfields camp, we have to move further towards the Shey Gompa at the height of 4400m following the path through Kang la pass situating at the altitude of 5375m. We have to trek for about 6 hours to complete our dream of the day.
Day 09: Shey Gompa to Namjung via Shey la pass
The early trekking to Shey la pass will leads us towards the beautiful place Namjung. The Namjung is situated at the height of 4400m above sea level. The pass of Shey la is at the height of 5000m where we may find a little bit difficult to breathe. After walking for about 6 hours, we can reach at Namjung crossing the Shey la pass.
Day 10: Namjung to Saldang
From the height of 4400m, we have to proceed towards Saldang to the height of 4060m acclimatizing ourselves. We have to walk through the main trail to complete our objectives. The whole trekking route from Namjung to Saldang is about 3 hours long. We can see the panoramic view of mountains throughout the way.
Day 11: Saldang to Sibu
From Saldang, we have to follow the river and will lead us towards the fields, chortens, and many monasteries. The path will continue towards Nam Kong River through the large settlements of people. After moving a little while from Nam Kong River, we can reach at Sibu. We will stay the night at Sibu.
Day 12: Trek to Jeng la phedi
We have to start the trekking to Jeng la phedi early in the morning. We have to trek for about 5 to 6 hours from Sibu to Jeng La phedi. Our trail follows the steep hills. Finally, we can reach at Jeng la pass at the altitude of 4900m where we have to spend the night at camp.
Day 13: Jeng la to Tokyu goan
We have to climb up to the hills, after climbing to the top wee can see the magnificent and glittering view of white Himalayas. After walking for about 5 to 6 hours, we can reach at the Tokyu monastery at the altitude of 4200m above sea level. We will stay the night at Tokyu goan.
Day 14: Trek to Dho tarap
From Tokyu goan, we continue our trekking towards Dho Tarap. The trekking route is about 5 to 6 hours long. The village is surrounded by irregular stone wall. There are about 40 houses at Dho Tarap. We will stay the night at Dho Tarap. Mainly magars used to live here.
Day 15: Trek to Tarap Khola
The trekking route of today is quiet long. We have to trek for about 7 to 8 hours to reach at Tarap khola from Dho Tarap. From tarp, we descend down towards the valley through the forest of juniper and wild rose. After walking for a while, we can reach at a stream which joins Tarap River from further east. We have to establish a camp at nice meadows which is popularly known as Kamakharka, which is at the altitude of 3800m.
Day 16: Trek to Khani gaon
The trekking route from the Tarap khola to Khani goan will be quiet interesting as the way will offers us magnificent view of mountains and narrow bridges along with gorge. The trekking route goes about 4 to 5 hours long. We have to spend the night at Khani gaon at the height of 3150m above sea level.
Day 17: Trek to Tarakot
From khani goan,we continue our trail that leads us towards the Lalberi. We have to walk downhill to reach Tarakot from Laberi. The Tarakot is at 2537m above sea level. The trekking route needs 4 to 5 hours to complete. We have to stay the night at Tarakot.
Day 18: Tarakot to Dunai
From Tarakot, we have to move forward towards Dunai following the Bheri River. After walking for about 5 to 6 hours on the main trail, we can reach at Dunai at the altitude of 2140m above sea level. We can have a good provision of lodging and fooding at Dunai. We will enjoy the night at Dunai.
Day 19: Dunai to Jhuphal
We have to return the same way down to Jhuphal from Dunai. The trekking route is short of about 2 to 3 hours long. The way goes along with Bheri River. We will spend the night at Jhupal at the altitude of 2320m above sea level.
Day 20: fly from Juphal to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu
We have to catch the early flight to Nepalgunj from Juphal. After a short flight of several minutes, we can be at Nepalgunj. After having the lunch, we will move towards the airport to catch the flight to Kathmandu. We will be at Kathmandu, at the end of the day. We can enjoy the flight travel from Juphal to Nepalgunj and to Kathmandu.
Day 21: Farewell program
The morning will be at Kathmandu. We will receive a fine and refreshing breakfast at Kathmandu. The agent will arrange the process of departure and will be there for the help for any inconvenience. The Google Trek Visit Mustang will arrange a farewell program for the success of Upper Dolpo trekking.
